Louis XV Walnut Serpentine Chest of Two Drawers

Louis XV walnut serpentine chest of two drawers (commode sauteuse), the two-board top with molded edge over two long drawers, each with replaced hardware and escutcheons within incised cartouches and built from molded and laminated strips; the fluted stiles continuing to the cabriole legs with rope cuffs; the shaped apron, well carved with C-scrolls, leaves and vines. Numerous candle burns and other early repairs to the top, as visible in the photo.

France c. 1780

48 long x 25 deep x 34 high

Price: $7,500

Please note: The drawers on serpentine chests are usually carved out from thick stock. This chest is different in that they are built up from individual strips, molded into shape then laminated together. The horizontal lines are an interesting and subtle effect.

Also note, there are numerous candle burns and other early repairs to the top, as visible in the photo.
