Delightful Blue and White Spanish Majolica Tazza
Blue and white Spanish majolica tazza painted with a prancing creature (dog?) in a landscape with trees and shrubs.
Talavera, Spain c. 1790-1800
8 1/2" diameter
The village of Talavera de la Reina, in present day Toledo, has been noted for its earthenware since the middle of the 16th century. Characterized by energetic, fanciful designs, this tazza is a classic example of Spanish majolica.
Note the 3 blemishes near the dog. These are stilt marks, where multiple pieces were stacked in the kiln.
