Rare Caughley oval bowl with relief moulding, the underglaze blue flower sprays and border with gilt decoration. Impressed "Salopian" mark.
A bowl from this mold is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. See, Geoffrey A. Godden, "Caughley and Worcester Porcelains 1775-1880" (New York: Prager, 1969), plate 77.
The impressed mark was used in two styles, one with a combination of upper and lower case letters, as with this bowl (see photos). The other used all upper case letters "SALOPIAN". Incidentally, The Oxford English Dictionary defines 'Salopian' as an adjective meaning, "of or belonging to Shropshire". The porcelain factory was located at Caughley, which was in Shropshire.
