Jaye Gregory (1951-2016) "Ana", charcoal, white chalk and gouache on paper.
Image 39.5" x 27.5"
Overall 42.5" x 30.5"
Jaye Gregory (1952-2016) worked primarily as a sculptor, specializing in the female figure. She was also a talented sketch artist, rendering portraits and landscapes with pencil, charcoal and pastel.
According to the artist's friends, Ana was a student model whom Gregory sketched numerous times. The arresting palate of this version- black on a terracotta ground- recalls classical vase painting, while the distant gaze suggests the influence of Thomas Wilmer Dewing and the Pre-Raphaelites. This work would hang comfortably in a neoclassical/Biedermeier setting as well as a modern one.

Condition: Framed with acid free, archival materials and museum glass. Note there's what looks like a horizontal blemish located in her line of sight, near the frame. It might be damage, but given its relation to the the sitter, it seems to enhance the mood and feeling of the portrait. The artist was probably aware of it and chose to leave it.
