Samuel Verplanck (1739-1820) was born in New York city and became a wealthy merchant and politician. He lived at 3 Wall Street from 1763-1803.
The Verplanck Room at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Gallery 718) displays furniture, paintings- including his portrait painted by John Singleton Copley- and objects that belonged to Verplanck.
