Large Wax Portrait Medallion, Dated 1752

Made of wax and measuring 14" x 12.75", this rare survivor depicts a couple in formal attire sitting on a bench, she plays a lute while he plays a violin, a sacred heart between them. A parrot and the letter "I" are at her shoulder, a squirrel and the letter "H" at his. Maker's initials "IC" lower left, dated 1752 in the white tiles.

This opulent medallion almost certainly commemorates a wedding or engagement. The dog at his feet symbolizes fidelity while the flowers at hers represent fertility.
