This charming, rustic bowl, manufactured in Teruel, Spain, exhibits many characteristics of 18th century ceramics from this rural town of northeastern Spain. Principal among them are the use of blue enamel and the naive decoration, often rendered with a wide brush and a sponge. Borrowing a technique from Italian Renaissance maiolica, Teruel artists often painted the entire surface of the object, treating it like a canvas, rather than offsetting the decoration with a decorative border.
