This cheerful vase draws its inspiration from ancient glass cosmetic tubes or 'kohl tubes'. Kohl was a black makeup used as eyeliner and mascara in the ancient world and is still in use today. Ubiquitous throughout the Roman Empire in the 4th and 5th centuries A.D., kohl tubes were flattened ovals and had two compartments, ostensibly one for each eye. This vase, with its similar shape and dual opening, is a modern interpretation of that ancient form.
