Early Byzantine Blown Glass Jug, Late 4th-Mid 5th Century AD

Early Byzantine blown glass jug. Of transparent pale green, the mouth and neck are free blown while the body is double blown in a mold. The wide strap handle is applied.

This jug is nearly identical to a jug now in the Landesmuseum Wurttemburg in Stuttgart, Germany and pictured in E. Marianne Stern, "Roman, Byzantine, and Early Medieval Glass 10 BCE-700 CE", (Olsfildern-Ruit, Germany:Hatje Cantz Publishers: 2001) Cat 148, p. 283. While the color and handles are obviously different, the body is nearly identical.
