Auger Lucas was born in Paris in 1685. He was accepted as an academician in 1722 and exhibited at the Salon in 1751. He died in Paris in 1765.

Lucas painted at least two versions of "Zephyr and Flora". Another, with only minor variations, hangs in the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Angers, France.

Zephyr and Flora was a popular subject in the 18th century, painted most famously by Tiepolo. Zephyr, the god of the spring winds, is depicted with butterfly wings. Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers is depicted wearing a flora wreath.
